Where Simplicity Meets Service
Where Simplicity Meets Service
Stakeholders:
Washington Street Homeless Shelter
Andre House of Arizona
The Salvation Army | Estrella Mountain Corps
Background:
Our team has found the PB&J service model to be consistently successful because it removes many of the logistical barriers that often limit food-relief efforts.
Benefits:
Ultra-low cost per sandwich (20¢ - 40¢ per sandwich).
No cooking or refrigeration required.
Fast assembly and distribution (125 sandwiches take 40 minutes with 5 volunteers).
Nutritionally reliable (Quick source of protein, carbs, and fats for energy).
Universally familiar and accepted.
Easy to transport and store.
The Metro Phoenix Community Food Distribution/Homeless Shelter Map
We set out to map all the community food distribution centers and homeless shelters.
This research helps us connect organizations with the resources they need and leads us to partners like The Salvation Army and Washington Street Homeless Shelter.
The map continues to develop as we contact more stakeholders, and will continue to support future projects.

Impact
Homeless shelters like the Washington Street Homeless Shelter run many of their meal services primarily on donations. They have told us that when donations are low, our sandwiches become a vital source of food. We donate 125 sandwiches weekly to them.
To date, we have donated over 3000 sandwiches to the Washington Street Homeless Shelter, Andre House of Arizona, and the Salvation Army Estrella Mountain Corps.
